More than a hundred people took part in a candlelight ceremony outside the headquarters of the Committee for State Security (KGB) in downtown Minsk on Thursday evening to remember the victims of Stalinist terror.
In the vigil organized by opposition politician Mikalay Statkevich, participants lined up along a stretch of Independence Avenue before placing lit candles on the steps leading to the entrance to the KGB building.
Mr. Statkevich turned out for the vigil in company with his wife Maryna Adamovich. In a short address to the crowd, the former political prisoner urged them not to be afraid and described the execution of more than a hundred of Belarusian intellectuals on a single night in October 1937 as an attempt to "kill the Belarusian nation, kill our people's soul."
Appearing at the scene, police officers warned Mr. Statkevich and Anatol Lyabedzka, leader of the United Civic Party, that they would be punished for organizing an unsanctioned mass event.
Charge sheets were drawn up against Messrs. Statkevich and Lyabedzka, as well as against poet-turned-politician Uladzimir Nyaklyayew.
No arrests were made and the crowd dispersed peacefully.
